Working from home undoubtedly has numerous benefits. You don’t have to commute to work, follow a dress code or even get out of bed. However, is it really that fabulous? One of the major problems telecommuters are faced with is house-sharing. Namely, at-home work isn’t reserved for middle-aged professionals or new parents.
More and more young people opt for working from home and are successful at it. However, young professionals usually don’t have their own homes and are faced with financial difficulties. Sharing a house with your family can be quite a challenge if you don’t have good communication and haven’t set up some ground rules.
Your loved ones need to be aware that your job is just like any other job and you need to focus on accomplishing your tasks in due time. There are some things you can do if you want to be taken seriously and avoid disturbance. Firstly, separate your work from your professional life.
If it’s possible, arrange one room like an office. If not, at least purchase an office desk where you’ll keep all your work-related material. If you’re still living with your parents, tell them not to clean your office space as they might throw away something important.
Remember, your job is your responsibility and you need to inform everyone in your life not to disturb you when you’re working. You could tell the people you live with about what it is you actually do. Once they become familiar with your job, chances are they’ll be more understanding and they won’t ask you to clean the house or go grocery shopping during working hours.
Make a calendar and circle your free days, so your housemates could know when you could actually perform household chores. Also, try to get out of the house as much as possible. It will help you clear your head, wind down and take your mind off your problems.
Finally, if you’re really having a hard time at home and the people you live with show no understanding for your job, consider the idea of looking for a flat or house that you could share with people who are in a similar situation as you.
